Ice Cream Sandwiches

Last week I shared a bunch of delicious ice cream toppings.  Today, in celebration of Ice Cream Sandwich day on August 2, we’re going to talk about the famous Ice Cream Sandwich!

The ice cream sandwich as we know it today had it’s beginnings in the resorts and fairs of the late 1890’s and early 1900’s.  Today it’s expanded into lots of different varieties.  Here are some you can try at home!

Some traditional recipes: Family Fun, Martha, mini sandwiches, chocolate chip.

And a more nutritious take on the traditional sandwich.

Some fun varieties: crispy sandwiches, meringue hearts, treewiches, spangled sandwiches, cakes, sundae sandwiches, wafflewiches, banana sandwiches.

Some fun flavors: mint, chocolate creme brulee, apricot almond, ginger crisp, pumpkin gingerbread, brownie & peanut butter, strawberry chocolate, coconut almond, coconut cream, macadamia nut & chocolate chunk, spumoni.

Some cookie/sandwich varieties: chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal cookies.

Have you ever made an ice cream sandwich?  Share your stories and memories below.

  1. I don’t like the ice cream sandwiches you get at the store with the thin chocolate cookie. But I LOVE ice cream sandwiches I make a home. Simple does it for me. Chocolate chip cookie with mint chip ice cream. YUM-O
